COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Cardiac Rhythm and Pharmacology

A one day course focused on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge.  The one day course is a pre-course option for ACLS students and other healthcare providers.  A self learning package is provided.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Providers Course

This two day Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course is totally redesigned for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital.  Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies.

ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.

ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader.

Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

The prerequisites for the ACLS Providers Course are:

· Copy/photograph of your pre-course Self-Assessment (requires a passing score of 70% or higher). Students can take the Pre-course Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.

· Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (within one year). The BLS-C card MUST be from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (Red Cross, St John Ambulance, etc are not accepted).

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Update Course

This one-day course, allows healthcare providers who has previously been successful in an ACLS course (within the last two years), to update and be re-evaluated in the knowledge and skills required to quickly recognize those patients at risk and respond to cardio-respiratory emergencies.

The prerequisites for the ACLS Update  Course are:

· Copy/photograph of your pre-course Self-Assessment (requires a passing score of 70% or higher). Students can take the Pre-course Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.
